Frequently Asked Questions
Ken and I thought this page would be useful because many friends want to know all about our adoption journey but some are 'afraid' to ask questions about it; they've said they are afraid it's too personal. So, I created this page with the most frequently asked questions. We are overjoyed with our decision to adopt and love to talk about the latest happenings. Just ask! In the meantime, this might help...
Q: Why adopt internationally?
A: Ken and I did a lot of research before deciding to adopt internationally. It was a personal decision that was made for many reasons. By adopting internationally, we hope to avoid our biggest fear: the birth mother changing her mind and the adoption falling through. When a child is adopted from Ukraine, they are living in an orphanage and parental rights are relinquished for at least a year.
Q: Why adopt from Ukraine?
A: Different countries have different requirements for adoptive parents. We decided on Eastern Europe because much of both Ken and my heritages are from Eastern Europe; more specifically, Ken's grandparents were originally from Kiev, Ukraine.
Q: How long did you stay in Ukraine?
A: We were in Ukraine for a total of 5 weeks. 4 weeks in Poltava and a total of 1 week or so in Kiev.
Q: What do your parents think about your adoption?
A: Our parents and family have been incredibly supportive of our decision to adopt. They are ecstatic about having new grandchildren in the family.
Q: Would you ever consider adopting again?
A: Nope! 2 children are just enough. (Besides, the adoption process was quite difficult (emotionally) not to mention expensive.)
Q: Do your children speak English?
A: When they want to.
They are learning english much faster and much better than we learned Russian and Ukrainian!
